Midnimo track drivers association join in the Nationwide Strike
Midnimo Long-distance truck drivers in Uasin Gishu have downed their tools protesting a proposal by NTSA to undergo a second test after three years.
According to Secretary General Midimo Truck Drivers Abdurahman Mohamud, the order is punitive and places a heavy burden on drivers who are on low pay.
“We are here to announce the strike of truck drivers whose rights have been infringed by the government. Sadly, our licenses are taken, removed from the system, and when one goes to renew them we are told we are not in the system,” said the Secretary-General Midnimo Truck Drivers.
“I want to urge our fellow drivers, let us join hands in this strike in order for the Ministry of transport to come up with a lasting solution to a myriad of challenges bedeviling the sector”Opined Mohamud.
Some of the oldest track drivers have questioned the punitive proposals that demand drivers to pay Ksh1,050 for every failure during the test drive conducted by the NTSA.
“I have been driving for the last 40 years. What driving test do i really need,,Should i e going back to school or should I be educating my children ? Paused a driver.
Yusuf Bakari notes they will not allow the proposals by NTSA and that they will halt all operations within and outside of the country,
“We are ready to go on strike for even three months until we get justice from the government,” he added.
“As truck drivers we have begun our strike and all vehicles have been packed. No one will continue with his or her daily activities until this matter is dealt with,” Omar Mohamed, driver for 32 years,” added.
The drivers have complained increased harassment by traffic officers as well as some narrow highways
