Eldoret:Traders to sue the Uasin Gishu County government for damages !
-Over 200 businesses have been affected by the illegal destruction within the CBD-
Huruma Ward MCA Wakili Kimani Wanjohi has castigated the County Government of Uasin Gishu for unlawfully destroying business signage ahead of the devolution conference.
A number of signage in the county have been destroyed in what has been termed by the County Government ‘a Clean up exercise’.
Addressing the Media at the Uasin Gishu County Assembly Hon Wanjohi said the move was uncalled for and ill-intended as other developed cities across the country and the world allowed for business signage.
Corporate Institutions such as Equity Bank, co-operative Bank, Access Bank, and even Khetias supermarket fell victim to the Thursday illegal county operation supervised by the CECM Lands Anthony Sitienei.
“I want to condemn this act with the strongest terms possible, how can a business person pay over Kshs.50,000 to Ksh.100,000 for advertising their businesses and just destroying their signage? This is uncalled for and stern action should be taken against those involved,” said the Huruma Ward MCA.
“I am still wondering why they would destroy the signage claiming they want to urbanize Eldoret yet beauty in Nairobi city and other cities is largely from the business signage. How will someone be able to identify where they may be heading? The signage helps in providing direction apart from advertising, so I do not see the reason why they would destroy them.”Stated Hon Wanjohi.
He called upon the over 200 business persons affected by the illegal operation to institute a court process demanding compensation for damages incurred .
“Over 200 businesses have been affected by the illegal destruction within the CBD , I will demand in the floor of the house a statement from the CECM incharge ,we want to know where he got such powers , the operation was not discussed nor sanctioned by the County assembly ,” added Kimani Wanjohi.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii at a press briefing has since regretted the move.
