Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign French forward Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, with the deal contingent on Newcastle United’s position regarding striker Alexander Isak, sources confirmed Thursday, July 17.

Liverpool’s move for Ekitike is understood to be a contingency plan, pursued only if Newcastle refuse to negotiate a transfer for Isak, who has been consistently labeled not for sale since the start of the summer window.

Newcastle reportedly submitted an official bid for Ekitike earlier this week, but it was rejected by Frankfurt late Monday.Despite that, Liverpool have since initiated discussions with Eintracht and the player’s representatives to finalize personal terms and a potential transfer fee.

Club officials emphasized that no agreement will be reached unless Newcastle formally rule out any possibility of parting ways with Isak.

Ekitike, 22, joined Frankfurt last summer from Paris Saint-Germain after a loan stint at Reims, but struggled for consistent starts in the Bundesliga.

Known for his pace and technical ability, the Frenchman remains highly rated and is seen as a viable long-term attacking option by Liverpool’s scouting department.

While Ekitike may not carry the same top-flight resume as Isak, Liverpool are seeking to bolster their frontline with a versatile striker capable of adapting to Jürgen Klopp’s tactical demands ahead of the 2025-26 season.

A decision from Newcastle is expected imminently, with insiders suggesting the Magpies are firm on retaining Isak as a centerpiece of their project under manager Eddie Howe.

Liverpool’s transfer strategy has focused on agile responses to market conditions this window, and the club is prepared to act swiftly if the door remains closed for Isak.

Ekitike’s camp is reportedly receptive to the move, though they are also monitoring other Premier League interest. If finalized, Ekitike would be Liverpool’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of midfielder Alan Varela from Porto earlier this month.
