Korea Launches Special Needs Classroom in Nyando

The Republic of Korea government together with Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has dedicated an Intermediate Special Education Classroom at Ogwedhi PAG Primary School which is located in Awasi of Nyando Sub-County in Kisumu County.
KOICA Kenya Deputy Country Director Hwayeong Bae used the handover ceremony to show how the initiative would help disabled students gain vital learning resources which would reduce their high school dropout rates. She explained that the project seeks to remove barriers which stop disabled learners from gaining educational access while it fosters inclusive educational practices. UNICEF reports that up to 75 percent of children with disabilities are unable to attend school due to the absence of mobility aids and support services.
The newly established classroom is fully equipped with specialized desks assistive learning materials technology aids a teacher’s room and secure storage. The facility currently serves 12 learners who require an educational environment which matches their individual learning requirements.
Kisumu County Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o Chief Officer for Education Bovince Ochieng delivered a statement which showed how the project enhanced fundamental education rights. He noted that integrating a special needs classroom within a public school symbolizes equality and dignity which creates an environment that enables all students to learn together.
“By opening this classroom, we are affirming that education is a basic right for every child, regardless of their physical or cognitive ability,” Ochieng stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive learning opportunities.
This project marks a significant step toward enhancing access to quality education for children with disabilities in the region and demonstrates a continued effort to promote inclusive educational practices in Kenya.
