Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi revealed on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, that his security detail was abruptly withdrawn the previous night, escalating concerns over his safety amid a public fallout with President William Ruto’s administration.
Muturi, who also served as Attorney General and the seventh Speaker of the National Assembly from 2013 to 2022, stated, “My security detail was withdrawn last night at around 7:30 p.m. Two police officers who were attached to me by virtue of my position as former Speaker of the National Assembly were told not to report for duty today.”
The withdrawal follows Muturi’s recent vocal criticism of the government, particularly over alleged abductions and extrajudicial killings.
Muturi further said, “If this is another attempt to intimidate me, they have dialed yet another wrong number.”
Muturi’s tenure as a key figure in Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition ended in March 2025 when he was sacked from the Cabinet, a move he attributes to his stance against abductions.
Muturi, a lawyer by training and a seasoned politician, has transitioned from ally to critic of Ruto. His security entitlement stems from his time as Speaker, a role that traditionally affords protection post-tenure.
Muturi accused Ruto of corruption and abandoning their shared commitment to integrity, further straining their relationship.
The move to strip his security has sparked outrage among supporters, with some on X suggesting it’s retaliation for his outspokenness.
