In a startling revelation, the Kenyan healthcare system faces a severe blow as 27 hospitals across the nation stand suspended due to their complicity in fraudulent activities.

Cabinet Secretary for Health, Susan Nakhumicha , announced this significant move following an extensive audit conducted on 67 hospitals between January and December 2023, exposing a troubling trend of patient manipulation and financial malfeasance.

The fraudulent activities centered around the exploitation of vulnerable citizens concentrated in specific regions, including Nairobi, Meru, Nyahururu, Muranga, Kerugoya, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, Subukia, Nanyuki, Bungoma, Chuka, and Machakos. These implicated facilities resorted to the practice of “induced demand,” subjecting patients to unnecessary medical procedures with the aim of inflating insurance claims.

The financial toll of this widespread fraud is staggering, estimated at Kes 20 billion, with 40% of the audited hospitals found to be complicit. While recovery efforts are underway, with Kes 17.7 million already reclaimed from identified perpetrators, the battle is far from won, as the total fraudulent claims amount to an astounding Kes 171 million.

Cabinet Secretary Wafula, in a resolute address, pledged to uphold the integrity of the healthcare system. She underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that those responsible for this egregious misconduct face justice. Additionally, she outlined strategic measures to address the vulnerabilities exploited by this fraud.

The suspended hospitals are now required to fully cooperate with the recovery process, and citizens are urged to remain vigilant for any signs of suspicious practices within the healthcare system.
