The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has opened its loan application portal for students enrolled at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), offering a financial lifeline to those pursuing diploma and certificate courses.
The initiative is part of a partnership between HELB and KMTC aimed at easing the burden of tuition fees and other education-related costs for medical students.
The loan is available to both new and continuing students. New applicants are required to visit the HELB website at www.hef.co.ke and create an account using their national ID number, a valid email address, and a mobile number registered in their name.
Once registered, applicants must activate their account via a link sent to their email. After logging in, they are expected to complete their personal profile by providing key details such as their place of residence, education background, and parental or guardian information.
Supporting documents must be uploaded before proceeding to the loan application section. There, students should select the KMTC student financing option, agree to the loan terms, input guarantor details, and submit the completed form.
For continuing students who have previously received HELB funding, the process is slightly different. They can either download the HELB mobile app from the Google Play Store or dial *642# to begin the application.
After registering with a mobile number registered in their name, they will receive a one-time password (OTP) to log in. Once logged in, they must update their information before applying for continued support.
This application window opens shortly after the government allocated Sh58.5 billion towards higher education, channeling funds through HELB loans and scholarships to improve access to university and college education.
The funding is expected to reduce dropout rates caused by financial constraints and increase the number of skilled professionals in vital sectors such as health. HELB has encouraged all eligible KMTC students to apply as soon as possible before the deadline closes.
