Bungoma County residents have been urged to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA) to benefit from its comprehensive healthcare package.
The call was made by Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, during the official opening of the Senator Wakoli Basketball Tournament 2024, held at Bungoma High School.
Addressing attendees, Dr. Barasa emphasized that the SHA program is a cornerstone of the government’s commitment to universal health coverage.
By registering, residents will gain access to essential healthcare services designed to improve the quality of life for all Kenyans.
“The Social Health Authority is a transformative initiative aimed at ensuring that every citizen has access to quality and affordable healthcare. I urge all Bungoma residents to take advantage of this program and register,” Dr. Barasa said.
The Senator Wakoli Basketball Tournament, an annual event, provided a vibrant backdrop for the Cabinet Secretary’s address.
Attended by prominent leaders from the Western region, the tournament not only showcased athletic talent but also served as a platform to discuss critical social issues, including healthcare access.
Leaders in attendance echoed Dr. Barasa’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of health as a pillar of sustainable development.
They applauded the Ministry of Health for its efforts to bring healthcare closer to the people and commended the SHA initiative as a step in the right direction.
The SHA program, introduced as part of the government’s broader health reform agenda, offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes outpatient and inpatient services, maternal and child health care, and treatment for chronic diseases. By targeting universal health coverage, the initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden of medical expenses on families.
Dr. Barasa also highlighted the program’s role in promoting preventive healthcare. “Through SHA, we are not only addressing immediate health needs but also focusing on prevention and health education to ensure a healthier future for our communities,” she noted.
The event underscored the synergy between sports and health, with participants and attendees being encouraged to embrace healthy lifestyles.
The Senator Wakoli Basketball Tournament continues to serve as an important platform for engaging communities on critical issues while fostering unity and talent development.
As the SHA registration drive gains momentum, the Ministry of Health is optimistic that more Kenyans will embrace the program, bringing the nation closer to achieving its goal of universal health coverage.
