Haki Africa, a human right organization has demanded the immediate interdiction of Eldoret main prison wardens involved in the murder of Oliver Ochieng who died of asphyxiation.
A postmortem report conducted at the Moi teaching and referral hospital mortuary revealed Ochieng was brutally tortured and bore defensive marks on his right hand.
According to Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid,Oliver had infections to his lungs confirming that he could have been tortured within cells at the main prison as claimed by some of his inmates,
“Prisons are not dungeons. We demand the Cabinet Minister in charge of security Kithure Kindiki to ensure Kenyans held in prisons are also protected from brutality and inhuman treatment meted on them by rogue officers” He opined.
We will ask that the constitutional mandate of the Police oversight Authority (IPOA) be expanded to cover Prison wardens,KWS , Kenya forest officers and County enforcement officers ,they all must be held responsible for their actions. He added
Monicah Wanjiru , wife to the deceased has claimed the late Ochieng was constantly under harassment from one of the prison wardens who had threatened to kill him before his release from Prison on 12th of this Month
“We spoke on Friday around noon where he shared his fears over his life ,he claimed to have been tortured by one of the prison officers who had even locked him up in one of the cells for close to ten days and they would pour cold water on him ,we demand Justice” She cried
The deceased father has demanded justice for his son saying after visiting the main prison he had been misinformed that his son had hit himself on the wall causing his death,
“Why would they lie to me ,the body of my son was dumped at the mortuary as unknown whereas the officers have all the details regarding my son, we seek justice over his death and those involved must face the law” He insisted
29-year old Ochieng was expecting to enjoy his freedom next week following his 1 year and two months stint at the remand facility over violence to robbery case that lacked witnesses.
Haki Africa has demanded protection for inmates who are witnesses to Ochieng’s murder.
