Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille’s political career was abruptly cut short when he was dismissed on November 11, just weeks after his high-profile visit to Kenya.

During his trip in October 2024, Conille met President William Ruto and other officials in a bid to bolster international support for security measures in Haiti.

The discussions were part of efforts to strengthen the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, led by Kenya and backed by the UN, aimed at curbing escalating gang violence in Haiti.

This mission involved about 400 Kenyan police officers already stationed in Haiti, with plans to deploy an additional 600.

Conille’s visit was significant, coinciding with increased gang violence that saw deadly attacks in areas like Pont-Sondé, which left at least 70 dead.

The Prime Minister’s agenda in Kenya included accelerating the MSS deployment and addressing the resource challenges that hindered its operations.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, his tenure was marred by the volatile political landscape in Haiti, where a power struggle within the transitional government culminated in his removal.

Kenya’s involvement underscores a broader push to stabilize Haiti, highlighting Ruto’s commitment to global peacekeeping and collaboration.

However, Conille’s dismissal adds another layer of uncertainty as Haiti navigates its ongoing security crisis and preparations for eventual elections.
