In a significant shift within Kenya’s ruling party, Kithure Kindiki has been appointed the Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), concluding former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s tenure in the position.

This announcement was made by the UDA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on November 11, signaling a change aimed at ensuring continuous leadership within the party.

Kindiki, who was sworn in as the new Deputy President of Kenya at the start of November, expressed gratitude for his appointment during the NEC meeting.

“I want to thank UDA for the swift changes made to ensure the operations within the party go on without any gaps within the top leadership,” Kindiki stated.

The NEC’s decision follows procedural resolutions in both the National Assembly and the Senate, cited under constitutional articles 75 (3) and 45 (7). These legal provisions rendered Gachagua unable to continue in his capacity as Deputy Party Leader, leading to his automatic cessation of the role.

The UDA’s statement emphasized that the move was made to maintain effective governance and robust political management. It noted that the committee’s resolution underscored the party’s commitment to sustaining strong leadership at the highest levels.

“By virtue of the resolution of the National Assembly and the vote of the Senate… Rigathi Gachagua is unable to perform the duties of the deputy party leader and thus ceases to hold office,” the statement read.

Kindiki’s appointment comes at a time when the UDA seeks to fortify its leadership structure amid a dynamic political environment.

His dual roles as Deputy President and now Deputy Party Leader align with President William Ruto’s strategy to streamline party operations and governance.

Analysts believe this move positions the UDA for greater stability and enhanced coordination, particularly as it navigates the complex landscape of Kenyan politics and governance.

Rigathi Gachagua, who previously held the position, has not yet commented publicly on the development.

His tenure witnessed both challenges and significant contributions to the party’s growth during a transformative period.

As Kindiki steps into his new role, UDA members and political observers will be watching closely to see how this leadership adjustment impacts the party’s cohesion and strategy ahead of future elections and policy initiatives.
