Only 7,000 Bags Registered Across County

Busia Governor Dr. Paul Otuoma has expressed concern over the low uptake of subsidized fertilizer in the county, revealing that only 7,000 bags have been registered so far.

Despite ongoing efforts to ensure last-mile distribution from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Malaba depot to sub-county centers closer to farmers, Governor Otuoma noted that the numbers remain dismally low compared to neighboring counties.

“What is 7,000 bags compared to our neighbors like Bungoma who are doing 400,000 bags, and Uasin Gishu one million bags—yet Busia is equally an agricultural region?” posed Dr. Otuoma.

Governor Calls for Increased Registration and Smart Agriculture

Dr. Otuoma urged residents of the border county to embrace smart agriculture practices and take advantage of the government subsidy by registering for more fertilizer to enhance food security.

“We must shift our mindset and adopt modern farming methods. This subsidized fertilizer is an opportunity to boost our yields and ensure food security in Busia,” he said.

Farmers Blame Delays for Low Uptake

While some farmers welcomed the initiative, others pointed fingers at the delayed distribution as a contributing factor to the low uptake. Many had already planted their crops following the onset of the rainy season.

“Next time, let the government distribute the subsidized fertilizer on time to allow farmers to plant early,” said Mr. Nicodemus Ogot, a farmer from Matayos constituency.

Distribution to Sub-Counties Welcomed

Despite the delays, farmers lauded the decision to distribute the fertilizer to sub-counties, which has helped cut down on transportation costs from the central Malaba depot.

“The purchase process is seamless now and there are no restrictions on the number of bags. Plus, the price is fair compared to agrovets,” said Lilian Auma, a farmer from Busia.

Auma added that she had previously used the subsidized fertilizer and recorded good yields, prompting her to return for more this planting season.

“I appreciate the government because this fertilizer has proven results. We just need timely access,” she added.
