The Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy has confirmed that the recent data breach involving the unauthorized disclosure of company registry information has been comprehensively addressed and conclusively resolved.
In a public notice issued on February 6, 2025, Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo reassured the public that the breach, which affected the Business Registration Service (BRS) systems, had been successfully mitigated.
The Ministry stated that all unauthorized disclosures of information had been fully removed and permanently erased.
Government Strengthens Cybersecurity Measures
The Ministry emphasized that all BRS databases and systems had been secured, with enhanced preventive measures implemented to prevent future breaches.
CS Kabogo assured the public that stringent cybersecurity safeguards had been reinforced across all government digital infrastructure assets.
“We assure the public that stringent cybersecurity safeguards have been reinforced across all government digital infrastructure assets to protect the confidentiality and privacy of Kenyans’ personal data, in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and other relevant legislations,” read part of the statement.
The incident had raised concerns over data security and privacy protection in Kenya, especially with increasing reliance on digital platforms for business registration and transactions.
The government, however, reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding personal and corporate data from cyber threats.
Public Reactions and Expert Opinions
While the government’s swift response has been welcomed, cybersecurity experts have urged authorities to conduct thorough audits of government systems to prevent future breaches.
Data protection advocates have also called for greater transparency in handling cyber incidents, emphasizing the need for early warnings and clear communication with affected entities.
“This breach highlights the importance of continuous security monitoring and regular updates to safeguard sensitive information,” said cybersecurity analyst David Kamau. He further advised businesses and individuals to remain vigilant and adopt strong data protection practices when engaging with government platforms.
Government Calls for Patience as Systems Are Strengthened
The Ministry expressed gratitude to affected businesses and stakeholders for their patience and understanding during the crisis.
Officials reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring the highest standards of cybersecurity to protect Kenyans’ personal and corporate data.
With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, experts agree that ongoing investments in cybersecurity, capacity building, and robust legal frameworks will be critical in safeguarding Kenya’s digital economy from future breaches.
The Ministry’s swift containment of the breach and commitment to improved cyber resilience is expected to restore public confidence in the country’s digital infrastructure.
