A group of enthusiastic primary school pupils from Kosachei Primary School’s Journalism Club visited the Eldoret Media Hub on Thursday for an immersive experience in the world of news reporting and media production. The visit, aimed at benchmarking and gaining firsthand insights into the media industry, provided the young learners with a thrilling opportunity to explore their passion for storytelling and journalism.

The Eldoret Media Hub, a pioneering facility and one of eight media hubs established by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), is at the forefront of promoting quality, professional journalism. Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and designed to provide a conducive working environment, the hub has become a beacon for aspiring journalists and media professionals across the region.

The students and their teachers were warmly received at the media hub by James Gitaka, Chair of the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association. Gitaka assured the students of continued partnership with the Kosachei Primary School Journalism Club, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talent in the field of journalism.

“We are delighted to host the Kosachei Primary School Journalism Club today. This partnership is a testament to our commitment to empowering young minds and equipping them with the skills they need to excel in journalism,” said Gitaka. He further noted that several schools in the region had already expressed interest in collaborating with the media hub to enhance the capacity of their journalism clubs.

Led by their patron, Teacher Wesley Kiplimo, the bright young minds embarked on a day-long training session, where instructors from the Eldoret Media Hub provided them with valuable lessons on how news is gathered, written, and broadcasted.

“This visit has been an eye-opener for our pupils. They’ve learned so much about the media industry, and I believe this experience will inspire them to pursue their dreams in journalism,” said Teacher Wesley Kiplimo.

The pupils toured the newsroom, interacted with seasoned reporters, and even got a chance to try their hands at news presentation. Their excitement was palpable as they showcased their budding skills in front of the cameras.

“I’ve always wanted to be a news anchor, and today I got to practice reading the news. It was amazing!” shared  Otieno, one of the young participants.

Another pupil added, “I learned how journalists work hard to make sure the news is accurate and fair. It’s not easy, but it’s very exciting!”

The visit also included a special session with Joseph Mecha, the North Rift Region MCK Coordinator, who emphasized the importance of responsible social media use and environmental conservation. “Social media is a powerful tool for young journalists. Use it wisely to tell stories that matter and to build your skills,” he advised. “Additionally, as young journalists, you have a role to play in promoting environmental conservation efforts to tackle global warming.”

The Kosachei Primary School Journalism Club, hailing from the President’s backyard, has already begun making waves with its active TikTok platform, where they promote environmental conservation and prudent use of social media. Their innovative approach to storytelling has caught the attention of many, and their visit to the Eldoret Media Hub is expected to further enhance their skills and reach.

This initiative aligns with the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association’s plans to revitalize journalism clubs in various schools across the region. Working closely with the Media Council of Kenya, the association aims to nurture the next generation of journalists by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.

As the young learners left the Eldoret Media Hub, one thing was clear: among them could be the next generation of reporters, editors, and news anchors ready to make their mark in the media industry.

“This training has shown our pupils that journalism is more than just reporting news—it’s about telling stories that can change lives,” said Teacher Wesley Kiplimo.

With their passion for storytelling, commitment to environmental conservation, and innovative use of social media, the Kosachei Primary School Journalism Club is poised to become a shining example of how young voices can make a big impact.
