Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has announced her decision to leave the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), saying she will seek re-election in 2027 on a different political party.

Wamuchomba said she could no longer associate herself with UDA or the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing the government of failing to maintain consistency in its public statements and actions.

The legislator also raised concerns over what she described as tribal remarks and attacks against some communities.

Wamuchomba said she had expected the government to take action against officials who made inflammatory statements. She questioned why some MPs had been arrested over remarks similar to those attributed to a Cabinet secretary.

“After soul searching, with my voters I feel my conscience does not allow me to dine and associate with people who have no regard for other communities,” Wamuchomba said.

She declared that she would defend her Githunguri parliamentary seat for a third term but would not use the UDA ticket.

“I am going to defend my seat for the third term. I am categorical. I am not going to use the UDA party,” she said.

Wamuchomba made the announcement during a press conference at Parliament Buildings on Thursday.

However, the MP did not reveal the political party she intends to join.

She said she would first consult her constituents before deciding on her next political platform and would announce her choice after the consultations.

“Once I consult the people who vote for me, I will make it public the political party I will use to defend my seat,” she said.

Her departure comes as political realignments gather pace ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several lawmakers reassessing their party affiliations and electoral strategies.
