Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is currently undergoing medical care at Karen Hospital, suffering from severe chest pains, according to Senior Counsel Paul Muite.
Speaking on October 17, 2024, Muite, who is representing Gachagua, provided an update on the DP’s condition, stating that Gachagua is under close medical supervision by a team of doctors and has been advised to rest completely.
“I have been able to contact the doctors at Karen Hospital, and there is a team of specialists looking after DP Gachagua. Due to his medical condition, I was not able to directly communicate with him, following the doctors’ advice that he must have complete rest. I was, however, informed that he is currently suffering from intense chest pains,” Muite said.
The sudden deterioration of Gachagua’s health has raised concerns, particularly as it comes amid critical political developments, including a looming impeachment process against him.
Muite emphasized the gravity of Gachagua’s condition and requested more time for the DP to recuperate before participating in any legal defense regarding the impeachment proceedings.
In one of the court appearances, Muite suggested that the impeachment timeline outlined under Article 145, sub-article 6b of the Constitution, be extended beyond the 10-day period due to Gachagua’s health.
“Article 145, sub-article 6b does not strictly stipulate a 10-day timeline. In the interest of justice and considering the seriousness of removing a Deputy President from office, Gachagua should be given a couple of days up to Tuesday to recover and defend himself,” Muite urged during a legal session.
The impeachment process against Gachagua has drawn significant political attention. His hospitalization and current inability to directly address the charges have added a new layer of complexity to the situation.
The defense team has been pushing for leniency in the scheduling of the proceedings, underscoring the DP’s health challenges.
Muite proposed that the court grant him at least until the afternoon of October 17, 2024, to assess Gachagua’s health and potentially return with further updates.
The Deputy President’s health remains a major concern, as his ability to mount a defense may heavily depend on his recovery over the next several days.
For now, all eyes are on both Karen Hospital and the political arena as the nation awaits further developments.
