Former Deputy President of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, has raised alarm over what he describes as a grave threat to his life and the safety of his family.

In a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, shared via his verified Meta account on Tuesday, Gachagua detailed a series of violent incidents and alleged negligence by security agencies, accusing them of failing to protect him despite their constitutional mandate.

Gachagua, who served as Deputy President from September 2022 until his impeachment in 2024, claimed that his life has been under threat since his tenure as the Member of Parliament for Mathira Constituency between 2017 and 2022.

He accused the National Police Service (NPS) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of colluding with criminal gangs to target him, citing specific incidents of violence.

On November 28, 2024, in Limuru, Kiambu County, Gachagua alleged that organized criminal gangs attacked a funeral service he attended, leaving mourners beaten and property destroyed.

He further referenced an attack on December 18, 2024, in Shamata, Nyandarua County, where teargas was used against his supporters in an attempt to scatter them.

The former deputy president also highlighted an incident on January 18, 2025, in Kamukunji Grounds, Nyeri Town, during a prayer rally organized by Rev. Maina wa OTC.

Gachagua’s spouse, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, was reportedly whisked away by private security as police in civilian attire joined criminals in the attack.

More recently, on April 6, 2025, at a church service in Kasarani East Parish, Mwiki, Nairobi County, Gachagua claimed that gangsters wielding machetes and crude weapons caused chaos, targeting women, children, and worshippers.

Gachagua accused the police of withdrawing his security and failing to act despite prior knowledge of planned attacks on his homes and properties. He further alleged that NIS officers have been trailing him in unmarked vehicles, describing a specific instance on December 19, 2024, involving an officer with a fake car number plate, KCR 919U. “This is a clear sign they coordinate with criminal gangs to attack me,” Gachagua stated.

In his letter, Gachagua demanded the immediate arrest of perpetrators, enhanced security for public gatherings, and an end to interference by security agencies.

He also called for protection of his homes and family, warning that any further violence would hold Kanja personally responsible.
