A bitter property dispute has emerged in the family of the late Mzee Jackson Kibor, a prominent farmer and politician from Uasin Gishu County, just one month after his burial.
His youngest widow, Ms. Yunita, is accusing her stepchildren of conspiring to disinherit her of the property left behind by her husband.
In a press conference held at her Chepkoilel home on Wednesday, Ms. Yunita revealed that she had been forcefully evicted from her matrimonial home in Kabenes and that her 57 heads of livestock had been taken by her stepchildren.
“Since Mzee Kibor’s death, I have had no peace. I was shocked when I was served with property restrictions on the same day he was buried,” she said.
The restrictions, filed by some of Kibor’s children, have become a source of distress for the widow, who says they are part of a plan to exclude her from inheriting what her husband left behind.
According to Ms. Yunita, the attempts to deny her a share of the inheritance began even before Kibor was laid to rest on April 1.
“I was surprised to be served with property restrictions filed by some of Mzee Kibor’s children, which were interestingly issued on April 1, the same day we were burying him,” she explained, adding that the filing came as a shock during a deeply emotional time for the family.
Since the funeral, Ms. Yunita has faced continuous turmoil. She disclosed that her eviction from the Kabenes home was followed by the taking of her livestock by her stepchildren.
“On Tuesday, my 57 livestock were shared out among the children of my co-wives,” she said, visibly distressed.
She also accused a family member of physically assaulting her, a matter she has reported to the police.
“I have been physically assaulted, and I have already reported the incident to the authorities,” she confirmed.
Ms. Yunita is now calling on the government to intervene in the matter. “My children are still young, and I need the property left by their father to take care of them,” she said, emphasizing the importance of the inheritance for her children’s future.
“If we lose this inheritance, their future will be in jeopardy,” she added, expressing her determination to fight for what she believes is rightfully hers.
The family dispute continues to escalate, with Ms. Yunita calling for justice as she seeks to protect her rights and those of her children.
