Uasin Gishu  Governor  Jonathan Bii  and  his  deputy  Eng  John Barorot were on Monday  forced to scamper for their safety  after  angry  parents  confronted  them at  the  Kapseret  County offices  demanding  for their monies which they paid  to the county government of  Uasin Gishu  for  the failed  Canada  and Finland  education scholarship projects.

The  Governor  was  forced  to board a different  vehicle  out of  the  offices  while  his  deputy was  holed up at  the  said offices  before  he  could  finally  be  secured to safety through a “panya’ route  afraid  of  facing the angry parents  who have  been demonstrating  for  the last few  months demanding an audience  from the county leadership, all in vain.

Brian Kimutai a Student  who had to  resign from his workplace  after  he was promised  that  the county government  would secure  him a place  at Thompson Rivers  University in Canada   all in vain’

“I am depressed I can’t  face  my parents  who sold   land to support my education journey , we  trusted  the  county government but  the  truth is  we were  conned”Said Brian.

Similar  sentiments  were  shared by another  student  Benjamin  Cheboson a  victim of the  scholarship program initiated  in 2021 by the  Then Governor and the  current senator Jackson Mandago who has  remained silent  ever  since .

One  and half  years  later  many of the parents  who sold their properties to support  their children in their quest for education abroad  are  languishing in poverty having deposited all the  monies  to a county government oversees account ,monies that have  gone to the  drains.

Esther  Kemboi recounts how  she sold her half  acre  piece of land to support her  child’s dream to pursue  further  education abroad , however that dream remains a  fallacy ,

“We  were introduced to some white guys  by the  former governor  Jackson Mandago, we  have sold  land  and  eight months down the line there is nothing to show for it , Our  children have lost hope many of  us (parents)are depressed,” She  stated.

The aggrieved parents have demanded a full refund of their money threatening to disrupt  the 8Th devolution conference  slated  for August Next month.

Neither  the Governor nor  his  deputy  who were  hosting  the Netherlands Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Maarten Brauwer, at  the Kapseret office  provided an audience to the  parents who have vowed to  go on with their  demonstrations.

Kimutai Kirui of  the  Centre  against Torture  has  challenged  the  county leadership to engage  with the  affected  parents and  provide  a solution

“The County government  cannot  distance  itself  from this fiasco, the  County attorney signed the MoU on behalf of the  County Government,The Governor  himself  traveled abroad where he  signed  the MoU’s he  therefore  cannot  show his  back on the parents  and  children of  Uasin Gishu who are demanding for Justice”Opined Kimutai
