East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Kanini Kega narrowly escaped an attack on Monday night after armed men allegedly pursued his convoy while he was returning from a political campaign rally in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County.

The incident occurred on July 13, 2026, shortly after Kega attended a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) campaign rally in support of the party’s candidate, Sammy Douglas Kamau.

According to preliminary accounts, the EALA legislator was travelling home when his convoy was allegedly followed from Ol Kalou town before the attackers caught up with him at Kasuku Centre in neighbouring Ol Jororok Constituency.

Kega and his driver reportedly abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot as the armed men approached.

The attackers are said to have extensively damaged the unattended vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Police officers who later responded to the incident recovered several live rounds near the damaged vehicle. Authorities have not yet released an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the attack or identified those responsible.

Images circulating on social media showed the visibly shaken legislator taking refuge in a nearby homestead after escaping the incident. He was sheltered by a local family while waiting for the situation to stabilise.

Speaking from the homestead, Kega alleged that armed police officers had pursued him and his driver and pointed firearms at them during the chase.

“Kenyans, you can see I’m under attack. I’ve been chased by armed police officers. They pointed guns at me. We were only able to escape. You can see I’m being hosted by this family. Ruto, you are not going to kill us unless you kill all of us,” Kega said.

The legislator claimed the attack was an attempt on his life and linked it to an ongoing political dispute involving three vehicles. He maintained that he would not be intimidated despite the incident.

“I am only alive by the grace of God. But we are not going to relent in the fight. I want to tell Kenyans that I’m temporarily safe in this house,” he said.

Kega, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has recently been actively involved in campaigns organised by the Democracy for Citizens Party ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

The incident comes amid growing concern over political violence in several parts of the country. Recent political rallies have been marred by deadly confrontations and attacks on political leaders and their supporters.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the legislator’s claims that armed police officers were involved. As of Tuesday, the National Police Service had not issued an official response to the allegations.

The latest incident is likely to heighten concerns over the security of political leaders and supporters as campaign activities intensify across the country ahead of future elections.
