Aden Duale, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, appeared before the Senate Committee on Delegated Legislation, chaired by Tharaka Nithi Senator Mwenda Gataya, to present seven transformative environmental regulations.
These regulations, developed under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (Cap 387) and the Sustainable Waste Management Act (Cap 387C), aim to address Kenya’s most pressing environmental challenges.
A centerpiece of the proposals is the Sustainable Waste Management (Extended Producer Responsibility) Regulation, which mandates industries to take accountability for pollution by ensuring proper cleanup of affected areas, particularly rivers.
This groundbreaking regulation seeks to compel producers to address waste generated by their activities, marking a shift toward environmental accountability in Kenya.
Other critical regulations presented target key environmental concerns, including water and air quality, sustainable waste management, sand harvesting, plastic packaging control, and the handling of hazardous chemicals.
These measures are designed to mitigate the adverse effects of human activities on Kenya’s natural resources and promote sustainable development.
Speaking during the presentation, Hon. Aden Duale emphasized the importance of these regulations in securing a sustainable future for Kenya.
He highlighted that their enactment would not only strengthen environmental governance but also bolster Kenya’s ability to meet its climate action commitments.
“This is a pivotal moment for Kenya. These regulations provide the framework to address environmental degradation and establish sustainable practices across sectors,” Duale remarked.
Once reviewed and approved by the Senate, these regulations are expected to have far-reaching impacts, including improved waste management systems, enhanced water and air quality, and stricter controls on hazardous materials.
They align with Kenya’s broader agenda of achieving environmental sustainability and fulfilling international obligations under frameworks such as the Paris Agreement.
The Senate’s review of the proposed regulations will determine the next steps toward their enactment.
Advocates for environmental reform have lauded the move as a progressive step toward addressing Kenya’s growing environmental concerns.
As the country faces increasing challenges due to climate change and industrial pollution, the adoption of these regulations promises a brighter and greener future for Kenya.
