Cherangany Hills Peace and Conservation Race Kicks Off in Elgeyo-Marakwet Ahead of CHERISH Programme Launch
The Cherangany Hills Peace and Conservation Race is underway in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, ahead of the launch of the CHERISH ecosystem restoration programme to be presided over by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The Cherangany Hills Peace and Conservation Race is currently underway at Tebe Grounds in Kapyego Ward, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, marking the start of a series of environmental and community-focused events in the region.
The race serves as a prelude to the official launch of the Cherangany Hills Ecosystem Restoration for Livelihood Improvement, Sustainability and Harmony (CHERISH) programme, which will be presided over by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki tomorrow at the same venue.
The launch will coincide with the commemoration of the International Day for Biodiversity 2026, observed under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” highlighting global efforts toward environmental conservation and sustainable living.
CHERISH is a long-term ecosystem restoration initiative led by the OKM Foundation in collaboration with local stakeholders and communities across the Cherangany ecosystem, which spans Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu counties.

Speaking ahead of the event, organisers noted that the programme is designed to “restore degraded landscapes while improving livelihoods and promoting long-term environmental harmony within the region.”
The Chief Guest for today’s race is Mama Dr. Ida Odinga, Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), who is expected to emphasize the importance of community-driven conservation efforts in safeguarding critical ecosystems.
