Students from Tendwo Secondary School in Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu County, marched to the county commissioner’s office on Monday to express their grievances. The students walked several kilometers to Eldoret City, undeterred by efforts from education officials to dissuade them.
According to Uasin Gishu County Director of Education, John Gitonga, the students raised concerns about teacher shortages and inadequate food at the school. “These students are protesting the transfer of four teachers who have not been replaced by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC),” Gitonga said.
At the county commissioner’s office, education officials assured the students that their concerns would be addressed. Gitonga added that they had already engaged TSC to expedite the replacement of the transferred teachers.
Another issue raised was the absence of a school nurse. However, Gitonga clarified, “A day school does not require a nurse, as students can receive medical support from nearby health facilities.”
Regarding the complaints about food, Gitonga mentioned that they had reached an agreement with the students. “We will engage with parents and the school management to improve the meals provided,” he stated.
Following the discussions, the students agreed to return to school while their concerns are being addressed.
