President William Ruto visited the Elgeyo Marakwet County Government exhibition booth ahead of opening of the 10th devolution conference on Wednesday at the Eldoret Sports Grounds.

More than 10,000 participants, both local and international, are attending the event that is expected to take stock of devolution’s successes for the past 10 years.

The President, while at the Elgeyo Marakwet booth, sampled exhibited items like pyrethrum, mangoes and other products which included leather shoes made by students from Kitany Vocational Training College, which attracted his attention.

“Unasema hii ilitengenezwa Kitany? Na wananfunzi? (You say this was made in Kitany? By students?) This is good. It looks nice,” the President said of the shoes that resemble military boots.

The President later in his speech urged the County governments to be innovative and explore flexible paths of revenues instead of only relying on allocations from the national government.

In his agenda to create employment to the youth, Governor Wisley Rotich banks on technical training of the youth in order to secure self-employment.

His administration has lined up empowerment programs, which include Tujiajiri, which aims to sponsor youth to pursue technical education in technical colleges and vocational training centres and equip them with tools of trade upon graduation.
