The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse [NACADA] has raised concerns over the increased sale of illicit brew in the North rift region.

Speaking during the Mashujaa day Celebrations, Eunice Arubia  the NACADA regional  manager urged the County Government and the Security Agencies to crack down on the illegal dens  used  for the manufacture and sale of  illicit brew  doted across the Uasingishu County.

“We are losing our youth to drugs and illicit brews every single day ,These brewers are increasing in their numbers every day , we will work with the relevant stake holders to tame this illegal business, “said Arubia.

Arubia called out to the political leaders in Uasingishu County led by the Uasingishu Governor Jonathan Bii and the Uasingishu county Woman Representative Gladys Boss shollei to help in creating public  awareness against  the use of illicit brew.

“We cannot allow these businesses to continue in front of our eyes as we sit and watch ,we  I call out to our political leaders ,our county Member of parliament  Gladys Boss Shollei to intervene on the matter,” Arubia said.

The NACADA regional boss also called upon the county to    provide alternative means of livelihoods to the women who have been  brewing Chang’aa and other illicit liquor in order to cut down on its production.

“The county government should provide women initiative programs that will help them venture into other meaningful businesses instead of them brewing alcohol to earn a living, we believe if they are supported many of them are willing to stop in the production of these illicit brews, “she said.

Arubia also proposed for rehabilitation centers within the county to help those who have been addicted   with the drug and alcohol abuse

“A majority of  our  young people are lost to  drugs and alcohol abuse  and are ready to change ,There is need for rehabilitation centers to help these people,” she said.

In Kenya ,60% of alcohol consumed is illicit brew despite being declared illegal.
