Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has stepped up his campaign for the Bungoma governor’s seat ahead of the 2027 General Election, pledging to prioritize healthcare, infrastructure, youth empowerment and economic development if elected.
Speaking during a series of public meetings across Bungoma County, Barasa said his administration would focus on improving essential public services while expanding opportunities for residents through development-driven policies.
He urged voters to assess candidates based on their record of service rather than campaign rhetoric, saying effective leadership should be measured by tangible results.
“Leadership should be judged by what leaders have delivered to the people, not by promises,” Barasa told residents during one of the meetings.
The lawmaker also reaffirmed his support for President William Ruto’s administration and appealed for unity among Bungoma residents as political activity gathers pace ahead of the next general election.
“I am ready to serve all the people of Bungoma and work with every stakeholder to transform our county into a hub of economic growth and prosperity,” Barasa said.
Barasa said his priorities would include strengthening healthcare services, upgrading the county’s road network, improving access to quality education and creating employment opportunities for young people.
“Our focus is to ensure Bungoma residents receive better healthcare, improved roads, quality education and opportunities for our young people. Leadership must be measured by development,” he said.
Political analysts say the Bungoma gubernatorial contest is shaping up to be one of the most competitive races in Western Kenya, with several influential political figures expected to seek the seat.
The county has emerged as a significant political battleground because of its large voting population and strategic influence in national politics. Analysts also note that gubernatorial elections typically attract intense competition because county governments oversee substantial development budgets and key public services.
Studies on Kenya’s devolved system of government indicate that voters are placing greater emphasis on accountability, effective service delivery and visible development outcomes when choosing county leaders.
With campaigns expected to intensify in the coming months, Bungoma is likely to remain a closely watched political arena as aspirants seek to build alliances and convince voters that they can deliver meaningful development ahead of the 2027 General Election.
