Former Chief Justice David Maraga and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna have stepped up calls for opposition unity, signaling early but intensifying efforts to form a strong political bloc aimed at challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

In a series of recent opposition engagements, leaders from different political camps have stressed the need to rally behind a single presidential candidate, arguing that fragmentation could weaken their chances at the ballot.

Maraga, who has increasingly positioned himself as a sharp critic of the current administration, has urged opposition leaders to put aside personal ambitions in favour of what he describes as a broader national rescue mission. Reports suggest he has expressed openness to working closely with like-minded leaders in ongoing consultations.

Senator Edwin Sifuna reinforced the push for unity, insisting that the opposition must consolidate into a single political force if it hopes to mount a serious challenge.

“We must be one force against William Ruto,” Sifuna said, warning that division within the opposition could hand the ruling side an advantage in 2027.

The renewed push has already sparked political speculation over possible alliances involving Maraga, Sifuna, and other opposition figures, although leaders involved maintain that discussions are still at a preliminary stage.

Former Cabinet Secretary and opposition secretariat figure Mukhisa Kituyi added weight to the conversation, noting that all political possibilities remain open as consultations continue.

“Nobody can foreclose on what will happen,” Kituyi said, hinting at the fluid nature of ongoing negotiations.

Political analysts say the renewed unity calls reflect a strategic effort by opposition leaders to consolidate regional and national support as attention gradually shifts toward the next electoral cycle.

While no formal coalition has been announced, the emerging message from opposition ranks is clear: unity is no longer optional—it is becoming central to their 2027 strategy.
