ABOUT THIS RADIO FEATURE

“Je, LGBTQ Wana Nafasi Katika Jamii?” is a thought-provoking radio feature produced by Joseph Mburu, a Media and Communication student at Moi University currently attached to the Eldoret Media Hub.

The feature explores one of the most debated social issues in contemporary society by examining the place of LGBTQ individuals within Kenyan communities. Through a combination of personal storytelling, legal analysis, public opinion, religious perspectives, and youth voices, the documentary seeks to foster understanding and informed discussion around a topic that continues to generate diverse viewpoints.

At the heart of the feature is the story of Farida, a young university graduate whose experiences provide listeners with a human perspective on the realities faced by members of the LGBTQ community. The programme also examines Kenya’s legal framework, including colonial-era laws governing same-sex relationships, while highlighting broader conversations taking place across Africa and beyond.

By engaging religious leaders, young people, and members of the public, the feature presents a range of opinions and encourages listeners to reflect on questions of identity, human dignity, social acceptance, and coexistence in a changing society.

Rather than providing definitive answers, the documentary invites audiences to consider how conversations about difference, inclusion, and human rights are conducted, emphasizing the importance of empathy, dialogue, and respectful engagement.

Produced in a documentary-style format, the feature combines narration, interviews, ambient sound, and analysis to create an immersive listening experience that sheds light on an often misunderstood subject within the Kenyan context.
