Police from Kamwosor Police Station arrested Vincent Odhiambo, a 33-year-old man who was caught transporting a large consignment of cannabis sativa worth over Sh13.31million.
This is as it turned out that Odhiambo had been intercepted journeying from Busia to Nairobi, while officers acting on intelligence stopped him and searched him. During the search, officers found seven bags containing the entire 266kg {7bags} of the substance popularly known as bhang.
According to the authorities, the drugs seized would have netted about Sh13.31 million in street value, thereby indicating the extent of the trafficking network and the emerging challenge posed by narcotics crossing the border with respect to major transport corridors.
Police said this was part of the myriad efforts to stop the illegal movement of drugs from border counties to cities, especially Nairobi, which remains a key city and transit hub for narcotics. In fact, Busia County had by now been flagged as an entry for earlier drug trafficking routes due to proximity to the Kenya-Uganda border.
The suspect was thereafter detained at Kamwosor police station pending investigations. Police stated they were going to find out the source of the drugs, the intended recipients, and whether the suspect belonged to a bigger trafficking network.
According to police, the seven bags of bhang were recovered and locked up, pending forensic examination and presentation in court. And More arrests are likely to happen as investigators follow leads to those involved in this particular case.
Law enforcement has reaffirmed its commitment to increase crackdowns on drug trafficking and related crimes, adding that those found participating in the illegal drug trade will face the full wrath of the law.
