Woman Shot Dead Inside GSU Mess at Eldoret State Lodge, Officer on the Run

Police in Uasin Gishu County have launched a manhunt for a General Service Unit officer who allegedly shot and killed a 45-year-old woman inside the GSU mess compound at the Eldoret State Lodge on Saturday evening.
The incident was booked under OB NO. 19/30/08/2026 at 1900 hours at Naiberi Police Station in Ainabkoi Sub-County. It was reported by No. 72015 Senior Sergeant Ronald Cheruiyot attached to GSU Camp Eldoret.
According to the police incident report, the shooting happened at about 1730 hours on August 30, 2026, at the GSU Camp near the Eldoret State Lodge in Naiberi. The deceased was identified as Doris Murei Nandi, a 45-year-old female adult.
Police say Murei was at the GSU mess compound taking alcohol when she had a dispute with Police Constable Nathan Kirwa. “The deceased was at the General Service Unit (GSU) mess compound drinking when they differed with PC Nathan Kirwa,” the report states. The officer, who was armed with a rifle, allegedly opened fire on her, killing her instantly.
County Commander Uasin Gishu Mr. Wilborce Sichara, the Sub-County Police Commander Ainabkoi, SCCIO Ainabkoi, the Scene of Crime Management Unit from Uasin Gishu County, STAPOL Naiberi and a team of officers from Naiberi visited and processed the scene.
At the scene, officers recovered seven spent cartridges of 9mm, a motor vehicle registration number KAR 371 U make Toyota Corolla 110, and a rifle holster all suspected to be for the suspect. The report also notes similar recoveries in independent media coverage, which listed seven spent 9mm cartridges, a rifle holster and the Toyota Corolla believed to belong to the suspect.
The body was removed to Eldoret Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examination.
The suspect escaped after the incident and is still at large. The case has been marked P.A.K.A – Pending Arrest of Known Accused – with SCCIO Ainabkoi dealing.
The shooting occurred at one of Kenya’s most heavily guarded installations. The GSU mess where the incident happened is inside the Eldoret State Lodge complex, a facility that is “heavily guarded” and is legally required to have mandatory GSU protection. Under Kenyan law, only State House and State Lodges legally require mandatory protection of GSU officers.
Eldoret State Lodge is one of Kenya’s official State Lodges alongside Sagana, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kisii and others. The government has allocated millions for its upkeep, with renovations in 2026/27 projected to cost Sh88.5 million as part of wider State House and lodges refurbishment.
Preliminary accounts from sources near the lodge indicate a possible love triangle. Witnesses cited by The Standard said the constable allegedly found the woman, believed to be his wife, partying with another man at the officers’ bar near the State Lodge before opening fire following a brief confrontation. Other reports described the case as a suspected love triangle and noted the officer is reportedly one of the bodyguards attached to a sitting governor.
Witnesses at the adjacent Eldoret Club said they heard gunshots minutes before 6pm, and saw a man in blue jeans and a white jacket holding a pistol run across the golf course towards Sukunanga Police Station. Club security guards who attempted to arrest him retreated after he brandished a pistol.
Police have yet to officially confirm the relationship between Kirwa and Murei, and efforts to reach the County Commander were unsuccessful by press time. Investigations continue.
