GSU Officer Arrested After Fatal Shooting of Woman at Eldoret Mess, Firearm Recovered

Police in Uasin Gishu County have arrested a General Service Unit (GSU) officer accused of shooting and killing a 45-year-old woman at the GSU mess compound in Naiberi, near the Eldoret State Lodge.
The suspect, identified as Police Constable Nathan Kirwa, was arrested after initially fleeing the scene following the Sunday evening shooting.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the arrest, saying the firearm allegedly used in the shooting has also been recovered as detectives continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The victim was identified as Doris Murei Nandi, aged 45, who was fatally shot at the GSU mess compound on August 30, 2026, following an altercation with the police officer.
According to the police incident report, the shooting occurred at about 5pm while Murei was at the GSU mess compound. Police said a disagreement arose between her and Constable Kirwa before the situation escalated.
The officer allegedly discharged his firearm, fatally injuring Murei.
Following the incident, senior police officers, detectives and crime-scene personnel visited the scene to document and collect evidence.
Seven spent 9mm cartridges, a rifle holster and a Toyota Corolla 110, registration number KAR 371U, were among the items recovered during the initial processing of the scene.
Murei’s body was subsequently moved to Eldoret Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Sicharani said investigations are ongoing as detectives work to establish the events leading to the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The arrest marks a significant development in the case after police initially launched a manhunt for the officer following his reported escape from the scene.
Earlier reports had raised claims of a possible personal dispute between the two, including speculation of a romantic relationship. However, police have not publicly confirmed the nature of the relationship or the motive behind the shooting.
Authorities are expected to rely on witness statements, forensic evidence and other investigative findings to establish what transpired before the fatal incident.
The case is being handled by detectives in Ainabkoi as investigations continue.
