National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has increased his presence in the campaign trail as the clock ticks to the highly anticipated Chwele–Kabuchai ward by-election, slated for Thursday. Wetang’ula, who also doubles as the leader of Ford Kenya, is aggressively drumming up support for the party’s candidate, Vincent Maunda, and has assured residents of peaceful, orderly, and transparent electoral processes.
Addressing supporters at a rally in Chwele, Wetang’ula assured that proper security arrangements had been made to ensure people voted without fear. He said security officers had been stationed all over the ward to discourage any kind of violence and intimidation, or disruption that could affect the credibility of the poll.
Wetang’ula said the government and local authorities have worked hand in hand in preparing a conducive environment for Thursday’s vote. He warned individuals planning chaos that their attempts would be swiftly thwarted. “We have reinforced security to make sure no acts of hooliganism or threats interfere with the voting process. Every voter must feel safe to come out and exercise their democratic right,” he told the crowd which included MPs, MCAs, and several community leaders.
Wetang’ula called on the residents to turn out in large numbers and elect Maunda, pointing out that the result of the by-election has wider political implications. He said the win would not only consolidate Ford Kenya’s grip on Bungoma County but also send a strong statement to his perceived political detractors who he feels have turned against him despite reaping from his support in the past.
He expressed his confidence in Maunda’s chances, saying the party was sure to win. “All attention is now focused on Chwele–Kabuchai. Maunda will triumph, and that victory will reinforce the influence of Ford-K in this region while exposing the betrayal of leaders who enjoyed my support only to abandon us later,” Wetang’ula said.
The by-election has drawn a lot of interest, with different political camps seeking to exert influence over the Bukusu community, considered one of the strong voting blocs in Bungoma County. Wetang’ula urged the electorate to sustain peaceful coexistence, shunning leaders who propagate hostility or division for their selfish gain. He instead asked them to consolidate behind Ford Kenya’s agenda, saying it anchors development, stability, and accountability. As the voting day draws near, security chiefs have assured residents that they are well prepared to ensure a smooth and credible exercise. All personnel and logistics required have been deployed, setting the stage for what is expected to be a decisive political moment for the ward.
