The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has issued a strong condemnation of attacks on journalists during recent protests.

The statement, released on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, highlights violent incidents that injured four journalists in Nairobi and Nakuru, calling for the immediate restoration of television broadcasts.

Violent Incidents Target Journalists
The MCK commended journalists for their professionalism during the Gen Z protests on June 24 and 25, 2025, despite facing significant challenges.

However, the council expressed alarm over violent attacks on media practitioners, striking at the heart of press freedom and democratic values. Four journalists sustained injuries while on duty, underscoring the risks they face in conflict zones.

Call for Protection and Broadcast Restoration
The MCK urged the police and protesters to uphold the media’s right to report without threats or obstruction, a cornerstone of an informed and democratic society.

The council criticized the shutdown of television stations, which briefly silenced news outlets, though the High Court has since overturned the decision.

MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo Omwyo emphasized that isolated violent incidents during peaceful protests should not be attributed to media efforts.

The council also called for the immediate reinstatement of signals for media outlets switched off, warning against unnecessary speculation and misinformation caused by information gaps. Without further delay, MCK demands action to restore full broadcast capabilities.

Commitment to Press Freedom
MCK encourages calm, constructive media engagement for balanced national coverage, respecting press freedom while broadcasters use strategic delays in conflict reporting.

The media shapes public discourse, and the council trusts journalists will continue upholding integrity and professionalism. This commitment remains firm as Kenya navigates these challenging times.
