Simon Njuguna, the Head of ICT at the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), visited the Eldoret Media Hub as part of the council’s ongoing efforts to promote high-quality journalism. The Eldoret Media Hub, one of eight such facilities established by MCK across the country, is a beacon for journalistic excellence, providing a conducive work environment and advanced equipment for media practitioners in the Rift Valley region.

Njuguna’s visit follows recent tours of the hub by MCK CEO David Omwoyo and Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Joseph Mecha, further underlining the hub’s significance in strengthening journalism in the region. During these visits, the leaders highlighted the hub’s critical role in supporting journalists with modern infrastructure, tools, and training opportunities.

Simon Njuguna inspected the proposed state-of-the-art multimedia workstations, high-speed internet facilities, and professional recording studio  at the hub. Addressing journalists, he reaffirmed MCK’s commitment to bridging resource gaps and enhancing the skills of Kenyan journalists.

“This initiative is a cornerstone in our vision of strengthening journalism in Kenya,” Njuguna stated. “The Eldoret Media Hub is not just a workspace; it is a platform for nurturing talent, fostering collaboration, and ensuring journalists have the tools they need to deliver accurate, reliable, and impactful stories.”

The recent visits by Omwoyo and Mecha reinforced the Media Council’s dedication to decentralizing resources and ensuring that regional journalists have equal access to professional environments. Omwoyo, during his tour, praised the hub as a critical step toward empowering journalists to uphold ethical reporting standards and navigate the challenges of modern journalism.

Joseph Mecha, the Rift Valley Regional Coordinator, emphasized the importance of creating such hubs to support local journalism and provide a voice for underrepresented communities in the region.

Journalists from across the Rift Valley have lauded the hub for its transformative impact. Freelancers and correspondents, in particular, have benefited from access to equipment such as editing software and advanced communication tools.

The Eldoret Media Hub is part of a network of hubs in Nakuru, Kisumu,  Kakamega among other regions. These facilities aim to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation while strengthening media professionalism across Kenya.

As the Media Council of Kenya continues to expand its initiatives, Njuguna encouraged journalists to leverage the resources and opportunities provided to explore digital storytelling and amplify voices from marginalized areas.

The Eldoret Media Hub, a flagship project of the MCK, remains a testament to the council’s unwavering commitment to empowering journalists and sustaining a free and fair media as a cornerstone of Kenya’s democracy.
