Chemeron Dam in Baringo South is set for a major overhaul after more than three decades of neglect.
Originally constructed in 1982 during the presidency of the late Daniel arap Moi, the dam will undergo rehabilitation works worth Ksh 400 million.
Principal Secretary Kello Harsama from the State Department for ASALs and Regional Development announced the initiative, highlighting that the project will include desilting and the restoration of essential infrastructure.
Once complete, the project is expected to benefit over 10,000 households and open up nearly 6,000 acres of land for irrigation—bolstering local agriculture and improving livelihoods in the region.
The Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA), in partnership with the Lake Victoria Basin Development Program under the State Department, will implement the project.
The rehabilitation will be carried out in phases over eight months. The first phase, backed by Ksh 100 million, will focus on early desilting and groundwork.
The second phase will receive Ksh 300 million to complete critical infrastructure, including the construction of water storage tanks and the installation of pipelines to supply clean water to schools and healthcare centers in Kimalel and Koriema.
KVDA Director Reuben Chepsongol described the project as a strategic move to address water scarcity, strengthen climate resilience, and foster peace in the region, particularly in Marigat Municipality.
Communities set to benefit include Koriema, Kimalel, and the Endao irrigation schemes, as well as upper zone areas such as Patkawanin, Kibingor, Sabor, Buiwon, and Marigat Town.
The rehabilitation represents a vital step toward revitalizing infrastructure in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), aiming to boost agricultural output and support long-term regional development.
