FC Barcelona has completed the signing of goalkeeper Joan García from city rivals RCD Espanyol for €25 million, activating his release clause.
The 24-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract and is set to become the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper for the 2025–26 season.
A Breakout Season in La Liga
García’s rise to prominence has been rapid. In the 2024–25 La Liga season, he played all 38 matches for Espanyol, recording 143 saves and maintaining a save percentage of 73.3% . He also earned eight clean sheets, showcasing his consistency and shot-stopping abilities.
His performances earned him two consecutive La Liga Save of the Month awards in February and March 2025, making him the first player to achieve this feat in the league’s history .
Additionally, García was named to the La Liga Team of the Season for 2024–25, further solidifying his status as one of Spain’s top goalkeepers.
Turning Down Premier League Offers
Despite interest from Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester City, García has chosen to remain in Spain, citing the opportunity to play for Barcelona as a significant factor in his decision . His decision reflects his confidence in his abilities and his desire to compete at the highest level.
Barcelona’s Goalkeeping Strategy
García’s arrival at Barcelona may signal the end of Marc-André ter Stegen’s long tenure as the club’s number one goalkeeper. Ter Stegen, who has been with Barcelona since 2014, has faced challenges with injuries and inconsistent performances in recent seasons. Reports suggest that he is open to leaving the club to secure more playing time ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup .
