Moi University Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut has reassured the public that the institution is not on the verge of collapse, but rather undergoing critical reforms to address long-standing challenges.

Speaking during the launch of the university’s renewed solar energy project, Prof. Kotut emphasized that the administration is making bold decisions to stabilize operations and steer the university toward recovery.

“People who think Moi is dying died a long time ago. We’ve identified the root of our problems and are taking steps to fix them,” he said, dismissing fears about the institution’s future.

He acknowledged the difficult decision to retrench 900 staff members, describing it as painful but necessary to ensure the university’s sustainability.

A key highlight of Moi University’s turnaround strategy is the implementation of a 30MW solar energy project aimed at slashing power costs and reducing dependence on the national grid.

The current phase, executed by Afriwatt Engineering Ltd at a cost of Ksh 4.2 million, involved the installation of a 51.7 kW Solar PV Grid Tie Solution. This is projected to boost energy savings from 11.12% to 32.3% and cut national grid reliance by up to 36.9%.

“Investing in solar energy is part of our long-term plan to reduce operational costs and promote sustainability,” Prof. Kotut said.

Despite past financial crises that disrupted academic operations, the Vice Chancellor remains optimistic. He said the university is open to partnerships to achieve its goals and is committed to making tough choices if they benefit the institution.

“We’re not just solving problems — we’re rebuilding Moi University,” he concluded.
