The Busia County Government has initiated the construction of 175 new Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) classrooms across all 35 wards to ease congestion and improve access to quality early learning.

Speaking at Maolo Primary School in Bukhayo Central Ward, Nambale Constituency, Deputy Governor Arthur Odera—representing Governor Paul Otuoma—emphasized the administration’s commitment to strengthening foundational education.

He noted that the initiative reflects ongoing progress under the county’s devolved education mandate.

“Our school meals and nutrition programs, launched last year in all public ECDE centres, have improved learner retention, especially in food-insecure areas,” Odera said. “We’ve also placed ECDE teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, enhancing professionalism and job security.”

The county has also made notable strides in teacher development and inclusive education. To date, 986 teachers have received training, while special needs learners have benefited from assistive devices and adaptive infrastructure.

Efforts have also been made to improve data management and develop education policies for better oversight and accountability.

In addition to infrastructure, Busia has equipped ECDE centres with child-friendly furniture, learning materials, and introduced digital learning. The county continues to support students through bursaries and scholarships for bright, needy learners.

Once completed, the 175 classrooms will bring the total to 444, with plans underway to construct at least 350 more in the next two years.

Nambale Deputy County Commissioner Caroline Onchoka called on parents to take an active role in their children’s education. “Education is a shared responsibility. Parents must step up and support learning both at home and in school,” she said.
