YEGO Mobility Kenya, an emerging player in the digital taxi-hailing industry, has rolled out advanced security features aimed at safeguarding both drivers and passengers. The initiative responds to a growing wave of attacks targeting digital taxi operators and their riders across the country.

During the launch event in Kisumu, YEGO Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Karanvir Singh, unveiled several key safety enhancements, including real-time trip tracking, an SOS emergency button, and comprehensive driver background checks. “These measures are designed to provide a safer environment for both our drivers and passengers, ensuring peace of mind for everyone using the platform,” Singh emphasized.

The real-time trip tracking feature allows both drivers and passengers to share their live location and journey details with up to five trusted contacts. Coupled with 24/7 customer support, this feature facilitates rapid response in the event of an emergency.

Singh noted that the introduction of these features is particularly timely, given the recent surge in violence against drivers. “The tragic death of Mombasa-based driver Victoria Muloki has brought to light the urgent need for enhanced security in this industry,” he said.

YEGO’s app, now operational in major towns such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Diani, Kilifi, Watamu, Eldoret, Nakuru, and Kisumu, is positioning itself as a leader in the taxi-hailing market by prioritizing safety. Singh stated, “We are committed to setting a new standard for safety in the industry, and we hope others will follow our lead.”

In addition to the security upgrades, YEGO offers its drivers a competitive financial structure, allowing them to retain 82% of the fare for each trip. This makes YEGO the highest-paying platform in the region. Over 25,000 drivers have already joined the platform, with plans for further expansion into more towns.

Imran Omoth, Chairman of the Kenya Digital Taxi Drivers Association (KDTA) in Kisumu County, praised the new security measures, calling them a “game-changer” for drivers who face increasing threats. “In the last three months, five drivers in Kisumu have been attacked during offline trips, making it difficult to trace or assist them. YEGO’s technology will be crucial in protecting drivers and encouraging them to stick to safer, online trips,” Omoth stated.

KDTA Secretary General Paul Omolo also commended YEGO for addressing key industry challenges. He highlighted an additional feature that allows drivers to withdraw payments for corporate trips before the client settles the bill, providing immediate financial relief. “YEGO is not only ensuring safety but also easing the financial burden on drivers, which sets them apart,” Omolo remarked.
