Elizabeth Chepkurgat stands in the dock at the Eldoret High Court as she faces murder charges in connection with the death of Dr. Simon Cheboi.

A woman accused of killing Dr. Simon Cheboi, a 48-year-old dental specialist at Iten County Referral Hospital, was on Thursday formally charged with murder  before the Eldoret High Court.

Elizabeth Chepkurgat, a businesswoman involved in the alcohol trade, appeared before Justice Robert Wananda, where she was accused of murdering Dr. Cheboi between February 21 and 28, 2025, at Annin Hills in Keiyo North Sub-County, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Chepkurgat, who was represented by lawyer George Songule, denied the charge and pleaded with the court to grant her reasonable bond terms. Her lawyer argued that she was not a flight risk and urged the court to consider her known place of residence in Iten town.

“Your lordship, my client has a known place of residence in Iten town and will religiously attend court proceedings until the conclusion of this case,” Songule stated. The defense also insisted that the prosecution had not provided compelling reasons to deny her bail.

Justice Wananda directed that Chepkurgat be remanded at the Eldoret GK Women’s Remand Prison until April 3, when the court will rule on her bail application.

Her arraignment follows investigations into the mysterious disappearance and subsequent discovery of Dr. Cheboi’s body at Annin Hills. Reports indicate that Dr. Cheboi went missing on February 21 after informing his family that he was going to visit a female acquaintance involved in the brewing and sale of alcohol at Annin Hills. His sudden disappearance prompted an intense search by his wife, Alice Chepchumba Chebii, and other family members.

Authorities arrested Chepkurgat after she was identified as the last person seen with the deceased. She allegedly went into hiding upon learning that the doctor’s family was searching for him at her residence. Additionally, investigators found that she was the last person in possession of Dr. Cheboi’s mobile phone before it was turned off on the night of his disappearance.

The case continues to draw public interest as the court prepares to make a crucial ruling on the accused’s bail application in the coming weeks.
