“As Uprising TV begins its broadcasts, it is expected to significantly enhance the media landscape in Vihiga County”

On August 4th, 2024, Vihiga County witnessed a historic moment with the grand launch of Uprising TV, the county’s first television station dedicated to delivering comprehensive local news, events, and cultural programming. The launch event, held at the station’s headquarters in Mbale, brought together prominent leaders, community members, and media professionals to celebrate this significant achievement.

Uprising TV finds its origins in Uprising Media, which was established in 2020 during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The restrictions of the time led Word of Faith Church International, under the leadership of Bishop Dr. Isaac Wawire and his wife, Bishop Dr. Jane Wekesa, to strengthen their media presence across platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. “Our media outreach was a way to stay connected with our community during a challenging time,” said Dr. Wawire, a Manipal graduate with a diploma in audioprosthetic technology from Kenyatta Hospital College of Health Professions, Nairobi. Since its inception, Uprising Media has grown rapidly, reaching between 95,000 and 110,000 users weekly.

The concept of a television station was envisioned by Bishop Dr. Wawire, and in May 2024, the necessary license was secured. Following a testing phase that began in July, Uprising TV officially launched with a lineup of live programming on YouTube and Facebook.

The launch event began with an inspiring speech from Jane Mwangi, Managing Director of Uprising TV, who articulated the station’s mission and vision. “Our goal is to bring the stories of Vihiga to life, offering a platform for our community to share their experiences, achievements, and challenges. We are committed to delivering high-quality, relevant content that resonates with our viewers and promotes the rich culture and heritage of our county,” Mwangi stated.

Governor Wilber Ottichilo, who served as the chief guest, underscored the significance of local media in promoting community engagement and development. “Uprising TV will not only create job opportunities for our youth but also play a crucial role in informing and educating our citizens. This station is a testament to the progress and potential of our county,” Governor Ottichilo remarked.

The event also saw the participation of other distinguished guests, including Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka, his deputy Jennifer Mbatiany, Vihiga Deputy Governor Wilberforce Kitiezo, and various CECs from both counties.

The launch ceremony was marked by vibrant performances from local artists, highlighting the rich cultural diversity of Vihiga. Music and poetry performances added a festive touch to the event, celebrating the county’s heritage. Attendees were also given a tour of the station’s state-of-the-art studio facilities, equipped with advanced broadcasting technology and production suites designed to support high-quality content creation.

Uprising TV plans to offer a wide range of programming beyond news and entertainment, including educational shows, health awareness campaigns, and platforms for local businesses to advertise their products and services. The station’s content will be carefully curated to address the needs and interests of the Vihiga community, ensuring that residents are well-informed about issues affecting their daily lives.

As Uprising TV begins its broadcasts, it is expected to significantly enhance the media landscape in Vihiga County, providing a vital source of information and a voice for the local population. “This achievement would not have been possible without the collective effort and dedication of everyone involved,” Jane Mwangi expressed, extending her gratitude to the partners, sponsors, and community members who supported the establishment of the station. “We look forward to serving Vihiga and contributing to its growth and prosperity.”

Governor Ottichilo concluded with an optimistic outlook for the future, stating, “The future of local media in Vihiga County looks brighter than ever, promising a new era of connectivity, engagement, and empowerment for its residents.”
