Uasin Gishu County has intensified environmental conservation and city clean-up activities in Eldoret ahead of the national Mazingira Day and Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled for October 10 and 20, 2026, respectively.
The county’s Department of Environment is coordinating officers and other teams to improve cleanliness across the city and its outskirts as preparations for the two national events gather pace.
County Executive Committee Member for Environment, Climate Change, Natural Resources, Water, Irrigation, Sanitation and Energy Anthony Cheruiyot Sitienei met environmental officers on Thursday to coordinate preparations and strengthen teamwork ahead of the celebrations.
Sitienei said the Mazingira Day event required the department’s full participation, urging officers to work together and ensure all planned activities proceed smoothly.
“The Mazingira event falls squarely in our department and requires all of us to get involved,” Sitienei told the officers.
He called for clear leadership within teams and better coordination of activities to ensure the county completes its preparations on time.
Mazingira Day will be marked on Saturday, October 10, at the RTS Barracks, while Mashujaa Day celebrations will follow on October 20.
County Director for Environment Abigael Kibet echoed the need for proper organisation, directing officers to appoint team leaders for groups handling various preparatory activities.
Kibet also identified the clean-up of the arboretum as one of the department’s key responsibilities, emphasising the need to maintain clean public spaces as Eldoret prepares to host national celebrations.
She said clean-up exercises had taken centre stage across Eldoret and surrounding areas, calling on officers to demonstrate greater commitment to the initiative.
“Clean-up activities have taken centre stage across the city and its outskirts,” Kibet said, adding that officers needed to strengthen their efforts to achieve the programme’s objectives.
The clean-up campaign forms part of broader efforts to improve Eldoret’s environmental standards and ensure public spaces remain clean as residents and visitors prepare to participate in the national events.
With Mashujaa Day expected to attract visitors from across the country, the county’s environmental teams face the task of maintaining cleanliness while supporting preparations for the celebrations.
The two events also provide an opportunity to encourage residents, businesses and institutions to take greater responsibility for waste management and environmental conservation.
The county has called on its officers to maintain close coordination as the celebrations approach, with the focus on a cleaner Eldoret and improved public spaces across Uasin Gishu.
