The Principal Secretary for Medical Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ouma Oluga, conducted a comprehensive visit to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) to assess its delivery of specialized healthcare services and its contribution to the government’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
During the assessment, Dr. Oluga praised the hospital’s role as a leading institution in Western Kenya, providing critical medical care, training, and research.
MTRH serves over 1.5 million patients annually, conducts more than 60,000 surgeries, and performs upwards of 2 million laboratory tests, positioning it as a cornerstone of Kenya’s health system.
Dr. Oluga toured several high-impact facilities within the hospital, including the Radiotherapy Centre, Renal Centre, Catheterisation Laboratory (Cathlab), and the advanced MRI unit. He lauded the hospital’s significant investments in medical infrastructure and innovation, which have expanded access to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services.
He also commended MTRH for fostering strategic international collaborations with institutions in North America and Europe, partnerships that have enhanced the hospital’s clinical and research capabilities.
Particularly, he noted the hospital’s successful implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA) model, which has streamlined insurance approvals and improved service delivery for patients.
Dr. Oluga underscored the importance of integrating services between national referral hospitals and county health facilities to decongest major hospitals and strengthen the overall health system. He advocated for a more robust primary and secondary care network to manage referrals more effectively.
“There are three pillars crucial to driving efficiency in the health sector—restoring public trust, upholding integrity, and ensuring the consistent delivery of quality healthcare services,” Dr. Oluga emphasized. He called on all healthcare workers to maintain a strong commitment to professionalism and excellence.
Dr. Oluga was received by MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa, members of the hospital’s Board, and senior management.
He was accompanied by Mr. Douglas Bosire, Acting CEO of the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council, and Ms. Agnes Tuiyot, representing the CEO of the Social Health Authority.
The visit reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for MTRH as a key driver in Kenya’s journey toward achieving comprehensive and equitable healthcare for all.
