The County Government of Uasin Gishu, under Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim, took a significant step toward realizing President William Ruto’s Affordable Housing vision with the official handover of the Kidiwa Phase 2 project site on Wednesday.

Chief Officer for Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Julius Koech, represented the Governor during the ceremony in Turbo, where he handed over the site to the contractor, urging swift action to meet project timelines.

Koech emphasized the importance of timely delivery, stating, “It is the President’s vision to provide affordable housing to the people. As we hand over this site, I urge the contractor to complete the project within the agreed timeframe.”

He also stressed the need for local involvement, adding, “The law mandates that projects benefit the local community. Employ locals, source sand and machinery locally—this will boost the economy for our youth and support upcoming contractors and suppliers.”

Turbo Member of Parliament,Janet Sitienei, echoed Koech’s sentiments, calling for tangible benefits for her constituents. “I want the people of Turbo to gain employment opportunities and own these houses upon completion.

I urge the contractor to set up a Boma Yangu office here for locals to ask questions and register for housing,” she said. The Kidiwa Phase 2 project, spanning 16 acres, will deliver 1,800 housing units, including studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments, complete with a swimming pool and recreational facility.

Benard Omondi, representing the contractor, committed to meeting deadlines and engaging the community. “This project is a catalyst for economic empowerment, from job creation for youth to supporting the Jua Kali sector with doors and windows, and even extending social responsibility to a neighboring school,” he noted.

City Board Chairman Julius Kitur praised the initiative, saying, “We appreciate the President for prioritizing Turbo and Governor Bii for fulfilling his Nguzo Kumi pledge on urban development through this project.”

Of the 20,000 housing units planned for Uasin Gishu County, 7,468 are complete, with Kidiwa Phase 1 at 77% completion. The event was attended by key figures, including County Director of Housing Beatrice Menjo, State Department Director Edwin Chepsiror, and consultants Judy Giocha, Ahmed Alkizim, and Architect Yasir Brek, marking a milestone in Uasin Gishu’s housing development journey.
