Two Killed, Several Injured in Eldoret-Webuye Highway Accident

Two people died and several others were injured in a morning accident involving a motorcycle and a tanker along the Eldoret-Webuye Highway.
The crash happened at around 7:45 a.m. in the Smartka area, opposite Oryx Fuel Station.
According to eyewitness Patrick Kiptoo Lagat, the accident occurred after a motorcycle hit a vehicle from behind and fell on its rider.
“It was exactly 7 a.m. There was a motorcycle that had collided with a vehicle from behind. We ran to the scene. The motorcycle had fallen on the rider,” Lagat said.
Lagat said members of the public rushed to rescue the trapped rider. As they tried to help, another boda boda operator stopped to assist.
He said a tanker approaching at high speed then hit the rider who had stopped to help.
“The tanker was coming from that direction at high speed and struck the man who had stopped to help the person whose motorcycle had collided with the vehicle from behind,” Lagat said.
The Good Samaritan died on the spot. His body was moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) morgue. The first rider also succumbed to fatal injuries, while several other people sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident triggered anger among boda boda operators at the scene, with reports that the tanker involved in the second collision was set on fire.
Eldoret West Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Wekesa said investigations have been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
He urged boda boda operators and members of the public to remain calm after accidents and to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
“We urge boda boda operators and members of the public to remain calm following road accidents and avoid taking the law into their own hands,” Wekesa said.
He called on riders to exercise caution on the road, remain sober, and allow authorities to handle accident investigations.
Police say investigations are ongoing.
