The second edition of the “Gavana wa Raia” football tournament, sponsored by Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, will conclude this Sunday with four teams competing for the grand prize of Sh1 million. Kapcherop Riders FC from Sengwer Ward secured their place in the finals after a 3-2 victory over Chemosong FC from Lelan Ward, representing Marakwet West Sub County.
The final match will be held in Iten, with a new champion set to emerge after last year’s winners, Emkew FC, failed to qualify. In the inaugural tournament, Emkew FC defeated Kimuron FC from Keiyo North to claim the title. This year, the Kapcherop Riders will be joined by Kipsaina FC from Keiyo South, Kipsoen FC from Keiyo North, and Kapchebau FC representing Marakwet East.
The tournament featured 300 teams from all 20 wards, offering a platform for local youth to display their football talents. Kipsoen FC from Kamariny advanced to the finals after defeating Kibendo FC from Emsoo 2-1, securing their spot for Keiyo North. Kapchebau FC from Embobut-Embolot Ward earned their place by winning 2-0 against Embomir FC, while Kipsaina FC triumphed over Kiebor FC in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
Local artists, including Arap Uria, Gogo Small, and Tula Chemoget, will provide entertainment during the event, with a special commentary team led by ‘Commentator’ Collo and youth from across the sub-counties.
According to Kibiwott Koross, Director of the Governor’s Press, Iten Town will be bustling with activity on Sunday as several dignitaries are expected to attend the event. These include Cabinet Secretary for Youth and Sports Kipchumba Murkomen, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and other regional leaders such as Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin, and Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi.
“We will also have a curtain-raiser match between the County Executive and the County Assembly teams,” Koross added.
