Soy farmer counting losses as unknown people ravage his maize plantation
A prominent farmer in Soy Sub County of Uasin Gishu is counting losses after unknown people sprayed broad-spectrum glyphosate-based herbicide on seven out of ten acres of his maize plantation at Kimisto farm.
Joseph Kipchirchir Terer was aghast after realizing 70 percent of his maize plantation was drying up,
“I Invested over Sh 500,000 in this rented farm ,I cannot recount a dispute with anyone that would necessitate this kind of aggression, “Said Terer.
Two people were spotted on the farm spraying the herbicide with Knapsacks while another third person stood by the road where a Yellow Chevrolet Pick-up carrying the dangerous herbicide had been packed just next to the farm. He added.
The nefarious act has been condemned by Barnabas Kipchumba Nyumba Kumi Chairman who has urged the security agents to speedily investigate the incident and arrest the suspects,
“We have never witnessed such an act in this area ,we urge the police to arrest those behind the criminal offence, we regret that close to 200 bags of maize may have been destroyed at a time when the country is facing an acute shortage of maize”Said Barnabas.
Police Officers from the Eldoret Central police station have commenced investigations after an Evaluation was carried out by officers from the Ministry of Agriculture.
