flocked the directorate of criminal investigations office in Eldoret
Wednesday to record their statements in connection with
bungled multi-million shillings Uasin Gishu overseas study programme.

Josephine Tireito,  Shollei’s mother told Hubz Media  at the
Eldoret central police station where she had come for a statement
recording in relation to the sh 1.5 million, she had paid as school
fees for her grandson’s studies to Canada which never materialized.

“I had taken over the education of my late son’s child  and he was set
to join one of the universities in Canada but  unfortunately he is yet
to travel  due to alleged fraud involved in the county run airlift
programme,” complained Tiretito.

The four days statement recording exercise is being conducted by
officers from the Economic and Commercial Crime Unit from the
Directorate of Criminal Investigations ( DCI headquarters in Nairobi.

There were long queues at the Eldoret central police station as the
aggrieved victims, some of whom had traveled from the neighboring
counties of Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi waited outside to record their
statements.

They were asked to carry with them among others, bank statements
showing deposits of money they made in the county trust fund, receipts
and any other documents relevant to the scandal riddled Finland and
Canada airlift programme.

“Please make sure that you carry along with your bank statement
showing deposit of money in the bank and any other relevant documents
related to the Canada and Finland airlift programme for statement
recording, ” advised one of the junior officers who declined to be
named.

The probe which is set to unravel any misappropriation of the more
than sh 800 million following hue and cry from parents whose children
are yet to travel to Finland Canada for studies to date despite having
paid the requisite university and college fees two years ago.

David Kosgei, who was among the parents who recorded their statements,
said that he was still stranded with his daughter who was supposed to
be in her second year at one of the universities in Finland.

“My daughter had been scheduled to travel to Finland in July last year
after paying sh 1.7 million for her fees, but she is yet to fly out of
the country. The county which is the pioneer of the airlift programme
has been taking us round the circle,” said Kosgei.

He said that he is no longer interested in sending her daughter to
Finland and that what he wants is a refund of the money he paid to the
county run trust fund.

William Kiprop, another victim of the airlift scam, regretted his
decision to pay sh 918,000 to the county trust fund account to
facilitate son to study nursing in Finland.

“My son is so frustrated and withdrawn and I do not know what to tell
him over the failed study trip to the European country. I have come
here to record my statement with a view of getting my refund of the
money I paid,” said Kiprop.

The DCI has stated in their social media platforms that they have
commenced investigations into allegations of fraud involving a
scholarship programme in Finland
