Senate Education committee seeks more funding for special needs schools!

-The ministry of education has been disbursing an equal amount of capitation to all students  in public school including those in special schools without consideration to their special needs-

The Education committee of the Senate is set to amend legislation in order to better take care of children with special needs.

Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, Uasin Gishu County governor Jonathan Bii noted that people with special needs and more so children needed better treatment in order to enjoy their rights as enshrined in the constitution.

“As a County we are very sensitive about people with special needs because they are part of us. They require serious legislation to take care of their special needs, parents and the community should not hide children abled differently , they deserve  an equal chance  to be  educated in order to make a  difference in their lives” Said the Governor.

The Senate  education Committee Chairperson and also the senator for Murang’a County, Joe Nyutu who led the senators in familiarization tour of the  Special schools within Eldoret, noted that  the  schools were  underfunded and  that there was  need to  increase the  capitation for  students in such schools in order to enable  the  management of such institutions better take  care of the management of such schools.

“The ministry of education has been disbursing an equal amount of capitation to all students  in public school including those in special schools without consideration to their special needs, this will be relooked into” He  Assured.

Professor Margaret Kamar has assured that the senate Committee of education is currently considering bills relating to learners with disabilities since they are a responsibility of the nation.

“Article 53 of the constitution demands that every child has the right to education and a right to health, Our children in special schools deserve nothing less  than what is stipulated in the constitution” She opined

The committee visited the Kapsoya school for the Hearing Impaired   ,Eldoret school for the Mentally Handicapped , llula integrated school for albino Eldoret and integrated school for autism at  racecourse Eldoret
