Egypt moved a step closer to a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds after a brilliant second-half comeback powered them to a 3-1 victory over New Zealand, with captain Mohamed Salah playing a decisive role.

The Egyptian star scored one goal and provided an assist as the Pharaohs recovered from an early setback to secure their first-ever World Cup victory in what is their fourth appearance at the global tournament.

The result leaves Egypt at the top of Group G and on course to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

New Zealand started brightly and looked determined to claim their own historic World Cup victory. The All Whites took the lead in the 15th minute when defender Finn Surman rose highest to head home a well-delivered corner from Tim Payne.

The goal sparked celebrations among New Zealand supporters, who sensed an opportunity to record their first win at a World Cup finals tournament.

However, just as they had done in their opening group-stage draw against Iran, the Kiwis failed to protect their advantage.

Egypt struggled to create clear chances in the opening half but emerged from the break with renewed energy after tactical adjustments by head coach Hossam Hassan.

The changes quickly transformed the contest.

In the 58th minute, forward Mostafa Zico brought Egypt level with a powerful header from a cross delivered by Mohamed Hany.

The equaliser shifted momentum firmly in Egypt’s favour as the African side increased the pressure on New Zealand’s defence.

Just minutes later, Salah produced a moment of quality that underlined his status as one of the world’s leading footballers. The former Liverpool forward exchanged a clever one-two pass with Zico inside the penalty area before calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner to complete the turnaround.

The goal was particularly significant for Salah, who had endured disappointment in previous World Cup appearances and had never before celebrated a victory on football’s biggest stage.

Egypt continued to dominate proceedings and put the result beyond doubt in the 82nd minute. Salah delivered a perfectly weighted corner that was met by substitute Trezeguet, who powered a header past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1.

The three goals arrived within a remarkable 24-minute spell as Egypt overwhelmed their opponents and demonstrated the attacking quality that has made them one of Africa’s strongest football nations.

For Egypt, the victory represents a landmark achievement. The Pharaohs made their World Cup debut in 1934 but had never managed to win a match at the tournament despite several appearances over the decades.

Now, with four points on the board, they are in a commanding position in Group G and know that a victory over Iran on Saturday would guarantee them top spot in the group.

For New Zealand, the defeat leaves qualification hopes hanging in the balance. The All Whites remain without a World Cup victory and must now defeat Belgium in their final group match to keep their dreams of reaching the knockout stages alive.

As the final whistle sounded, the spotlight belonged to Salah, whose goal and assist helped end Egypt’s long wait for a World Cup triumph and moved the Pharaohs within touching distance of another historic milestone.

After decades of frustration on football’s biggest stage, Egypt’s World Cup dream is finally becoming a reality.
